Ninety-five delegates from 19 OPEC and non-OPEC countries participating in the Declaration of Cooperation were in attendance, along with a number of international organizations.<\/p>\n
The Meeting continues to serve as a dynamic forum facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise on various key topics related to climate change and sustainable development. In its 21st iteration, the event focused on the latest developments related to UN climate change discussions, climate finance, processes connected to the first global stocktake under the Paris Agreement, among others.<\/p>\n
OPEC Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, opened the Meeting by highlighting its importance, noting that the event has become a regular gathering on the Organization\u2019s agenda for an open and interactive dialogue on climate change, sustainable development and other important matters.<\/p>\n
The Secretary General underlined the vital role that joint work and dialogue can play in addressing climate change. \u201cWe have proven how much can be achieved through collaboration,\u201d he stated, adding, \u201cI urge you to continue to work together as a team, and build on this friendship and cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Barkindo noted further that the provision of sufficient finance, along with technology research and transfer, are needed to develop clean energy sources, which helps drive national development, as well as a just energy transition. \u201cThis will have an additional effect of supporting oil market stability and in turn the world economy,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n
The Secretary General in his remarks encouraged developing countries to enhance their mitigation and adaptation actions to support their environmental efforts.<\/p>\n
\u201cDeveloping countries in particular are struggling more than ever with energy security in the face of the pandemic, in addition to climate change adaptation measures,\u201d he noted. He highlighted that energy security must be ensured in \u201ca sustainable and just manner.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Secretary General also recalled his long career in climate change talks and negotiations, including attending many COP meetings, which has spanned several decades and encompassed representing OPEC as well as his home country Nigeria. \u201cThe UNFCCC talks are very close to my heart, and I have spent almost all my working life in this process,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s meeting convened following the Fifth Technical Workshop on Climate Change, which was held yesterday, 30 May 2022, via videoconference and ahead of COP27 scheduled for November of this year in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
